Thailand Steel Policy Debate

Thailand’s Government has been inviting foreign investors to boost its economy.  However, when it comes to steel, the local industry worries about their chances in the future competition.  Shougang Corporation of China has approached Thailand to express their commitment to establish an integrated steel plant with a staggering –by the region’s scale- annual production capacity of 3-4 million tons.  The chairman of Thailand Iron and Steel Institute Mr Piboonsak Arthabowornpisan, has raised concerns from domestic producers that the new capacity would harm them.  He proposes that Chinese steelmakers were only allowed to invest solely in upstream production, long products, and special-grade steels.
